- There are 394 openings for NDA 1 2026 in the Army, Navy, and Air Force wings.
Can NDA preparation begin after the 10th?
Indeed, this is the ideal time to begin.
You must be in Class 12 (or have passed it) in order to take the NDA exam. However, there isn’t a rule that prohibits you from getting ready. The most intelligent students actually start their NDA foundation course immediately after the tenth grade.
Consider this: you are tested on topics at the Class 11 and 12 level in the NDA written exam. Your chances of passing the test increase significantly if you dedicate two full years to developing that knowledge rather than cramming it in six months before the test.

Stage 1: Written Examination

Objective-type (MCQ) questions are used in the exam. Wild guesswork is not a good tactic because there is a negative marking system.
Step 2: Interview with SSB
Those who pass the written exam are invited to the SSB (Services Selection Board) interview. This is a five-day test with 900 points, which is the same weight as the written exam.
The SSB procedure is not like any exam you have ever taken in school. It is not meant to test your memory, but rather your personality. Over the course of five days, the following occurs:
- Day 1 (Screening): Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) test + Picture Perception and Description Test (PPDT). Only those who perform well move forward.
- Thematic Apperception Test (TAT), Word Association Test (WAT), Situation Reaction Test (SRT), and Self-Description Test are the psychological tests administered on Day 2. These show how you think and how mature your emotions are.Self-Description Test. These reveal your thinking patterns and emotional Group discussions, group planning exercises, obstacle courses, command tasks, and more are all included in Days 3 and 4 (Group Tasks). Assessors look at your leadership, decision-making, and teamwork.e. Assessors observe your teamwork, decision-making, and leadership.
- Day 5 (Personal Interview + Conference): You will have a one-on-one interview and then a final conference where all of the assessors will talk about your overall performance.
You are evaluated independently by three distinct professionals: the psychologist, the group testing officer, and the interviewing officer. They search for what the military refers to as OLQs, or Officer-Like Qualities, which include bravery, initiative, mental toughness, and the capacity to lead under duress.
This is the reason personality development is so important, beginning in Class 10. These attributes take time to develop.
Final Choice
Selected candidates go through a medical examination following SSB. Written and SSB scores are combined to create the final merit list. Successful applicants start their training as cadets at the National Defence Academy in Pune.

- Every day, spend at least 15 to 20 minutes reading the newspaper.

- Review Science and Social Science in Classes 9 and 10; these subjects are the source of many questions.
- English grammar practice is an area where consistent effort yields rapid results.
Step 4: Begin Exercise Right Away
Most students make a grave error at this point. Until it’s too late, they ignore physical fitness entirely and only concentrate on books.
Strict medical and physical requirements are part of the NDA selection process. Additionally, the SSB’s Group Tasks demand genuine physical endurance and vigor.

- Running—start with 1–2 km and gradually increase to 5 km
